One week an outfit fits perfectly, and the next it is too small. Babies grow fast, and clothing sizes can be confusing. This guide explains how sizes usually work and how to choose clothes that fit comfortably and last a little longer.
How baby sizes are labelled
Most baby and kids clothing is labelled by age range, such as 0–3 months, 3–6 months, 6–12 months, 1–2 years and so on. Some brands also show height or weight on the label or size chart.
The age on the label is only a guide. Babies of the same age can be very different in height and weight, so it is better to go by your child’s size than by their age alone.
Why sizes vary between brands
Each brand cuts its clothes a little differently. A 6–12 months top from one brand may fit like a 3–6 months top from another. Fabric matters too: stretchy knits are more forgiving than woven fabrics.
Whenever a size chart is available, check your child’s height and weight against it before you buy.
Simple tips for a good fit
Measure your child’s height and keep a note on your phone. It makes shopping, and gifting by family members, much easier.
If your child is between sizes, choose the bigger size. A little extra room lasts longer and is more comfortable.
Look for easy necklines, front openings and soft elastic waistbands, especially for babies and toddlers.
Cotton clothes may shrink slightly after washing, so follow the care label and consider this when choosing a size.
Signs it’s time for the next size
Snaps or buttons are hard to close, sleeves or legs look short, the neck opening feels tight over the head, or elastic leaves marks on the skin. When you notice these, it is time to move up a size.
