Getting ready for a new baby is exciting, and it can also feel like there is an endless list of things to buy. The good news is that newborns need fewer things than most shopping lists suggest. This checklist covers the everyday basics for the first few months, so you can prepare calmly and add more as you learn what your baby likes.

Every family is different. Use this as a starting point, and always follow the advice of your doctor or paediatrician for anything related to your baby’s health, feeding or sleep.

Clothing

Babies grow quickly in the first months, so it helps to buy a few pieces in newborn size and more in the next size up. Soft, breathable cotton is a comfortable everyday choice in our weather.

A useful starting set: a handful of bodysuits or jablas, a few full-length outfits or rompers, two or three caps, soft socks or booties, mittens if you like them, and one or two light layers for cooler evenings. Front-opening and wide-neck designs make changing easier for both of you.

Wash new clothes once before the first wear, using a mild detergent.

Diapers and changing

Newborns go through many diapers a day, so keep a comfortable supply at home. Many parents start with a smaller pack in newborn size, then buy more once they know which size and brand fit their baby best.

You will also want baby wipes or soft cotton cloths, a changing mat or washable sheet, and a small bag or basket to keep everything together near where you change your baby.

Feeding

What you need here depends on how you plan to feed your baby, and your doctor is the best person to guide you. Common basics include burp cloths or small towels, a few bibs, and, if you use bottles, bottles with suitable nipples and a bottle brush for cleaning.

Keep feeding items clean and dry between uses, and follow the instructions that come with each product.

Bath and everyday care

For bath time, a soft towel (a hooded one is handy), a few washcloths and a gentle baby wash are usually enough at the start. A baby comb or soft brush and baby nail scissors or a clipper are small things that are easy to forget.

Choose mild, baby-specific products and try one new product at a time so you can notice how your baby’s skin responds. If you have any concerns, ask your doctor.

Out and about

A roomy bag for diapers, wipes, a change of clothes and a burp cloth makes short outings much easier. A soft blanket or swaddle cloth is useful at home and on the go.

For travel by car or scooter, speak to your doctor or a trusted expert about safe options for carrying your baby.

What can wait

Toys, shoes and many gadgets can wait until your baby is a little older. Newborns mostly need comfort, feeding, clean diapers and you. You can always add more as your baby grows and their routine settles.
